John Hargreaves was appointed as Musical Director of the Beckenham Concert Band in September 2002 succeeding the late Ken Messenger.
John was brought up on a diet of Rock ‘n’ Roll and Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. His first gig was playing drums with his father's 1950’s tribute band at the age of 10. After studying Music at York University, John arrived in London and is currently Head of Music at a well known public school in Surrey.
In addition to the Beckenham Concert Band, John is Musical Director for the West Wickham Operatic Society who have recently presented succesful productions such as ‘The Full Monty’, ‘The Producers’ and ‘The Pirates of Penzance.’
John also plays with the ‘Dulwich Village People’, ‘The Susan Williams Five’ and latin band ‘Gringo Loco’. Somewhere in his busy schedule John also finds time to arrange and compose, most notably ‘Il Travesti’, a comic opera recorded in 2002.
